OUTDOOR PEST CONTROL METHODS

Chemical Treatments

Havard uses EPA-approved and environmentally-conscious chemical yard treatments to eliminate and prevent outdoor pests such as ants, mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, spiders, cockroaches, and more. Our products are safe for your plants, pets, and loved ones based on the application methods of our highly trained and licensed technicians.

Tailored Approaches

Some species of pests or particularly nasty outdoor infestations require specialized treatment and removal approaches. Havard has seen it all and is equipped to develop a custom plan to meet your needs and help you take back your yard.

Nest Control

Our skilled technicians eliminate unwelcome outdoor pests by treating or removing their nesting places, such as fire ant mounds, spider nests, and mosquito-breeding standing water. This helps to not only stop pests in their tracks, but also keeps them and their friends from coming back.

SIGNS OF OUTDOOR PESTS

Yard Invaders Can Ruin Your Time Outdoors

If you notice these signs when you’re out in your yard, it’s time to consult a Havard professional for an inspection and treatment options.

MOSQUITOES

Mosquito infestations are marked by an increase in mosquito bites and the presence of buzzing sounds. Mosquitoes infest cool, shaded areas and breed in standing water (like ponds, bird baths, or planter pots). Besides being an itchy annoyance, mosquitoes carry extremely dangerous diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and West Nile Virus.

ANTS

While ants are (usually) more annoying than harmful, they do carry certain dangers, such as food contamination and allergic reactions. Fire ants can be particularly harmful, damaging plants, crops, and electrical equipment. If you see an increase of antbeds in your yard, it’s time to call Havard!

FLEAS

Fleas love damp, shady areas–especially where wildlife is present. Characterized by small, itchy red bites, excessive scratching in pets, and tiny black specs found in hair or fur, fleas can transmit diseases to humans and pets and cause extreme skin irritation and hair loss.

TICKS

Ticks are one of the most dangerous yard invaders, carrying diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Anaplasmosis, and more. These neisances can affect humans and dogs alike and are particularly fond of areas with tall grass, leaf litter, wooded edges, and increased wildlife population.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are outdoor pest control treatments safe for kids and pets?
Yes. Licensed pest control companies use EPA-approved products and apply them in ways that minimize risk to people and pets. Treatments are typically low-toxicity and safe after drying. Always follow your technician’s post-treatment instructions.
When is mosquito season, and how long does it last?
Mosquito season usually begins in spring and peaks during the warm, humid summer months. In southern regions, activity can start as early as March and last through October. Regular treatments during this time help keep populations under control.
How can I get rid of mosquitoes around my home or business?
To reduce mosquitoes, eliminate standing water (birdbaths, buckets, gutters), trim overgrown vegetation, and use mosquito-repelling plants or outdoor fans. For long-term control, professional mosquito treatments can target breeding areas and reduce the population effectively.
What do fire ant mounds look like?
Fire ants build mounds of loose soil, often in open, sunny areas. These mounds can vary in size, sometimes reaching 10-15 inches high and extending deep underground. Depending on the soil type and colony maturity, mounds can be dome-shaped or more scattered.
Are fire ant stings dangerous?
For most people, fire ant stings or bites will cause burning, itching, and welts. These symptoms may be painful or uncomfortable, but aren’t life-threatening. However, some individuals can have severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention. This is particularly dangerous for babies and small children.
What outdoor spiders can be found in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana?
The Southeast has a variety of outdoor spiders, some beneficial and others potentially harmful. Jumping spiders, wolf spiders, and garden spiders are generally harmless to humans and may even help eliminate other pests, such as gnats and mosquitoes. Other native species, however, like the Brown Recluse and Black Widow spiders, are venomous and should be treated with caution.
How do I identify a dangerous spider?
Most spider species found in MS, AL, and LA are relatively harmless, but the Black Widow, Brown Widow, and Brown Recluse are extremely venomous and harmful to pets and humans. Both Widow varieties can be recognized by the characteristic “hourglass” shape found on their abdomens. A Brown Recluse will have a distinctly violin-shaped marking on its body. These venomous spiders will typically nest in dark, undisturbed areas like sheds, storage boxes, and covered machinery. If you suspect you have any of these pests on your property, call Havard for an inspection right away.
