When we were little, and singing about the itsy bitsy spider, no one ever told us the itsy bitsy spider could be dangerous. If they had, we would have probably been grateful for the water spout that spits the spider out due to torrential rainfall. Funny enough, this children's nursery rhyme actually has something right to say about spiders, they do in fact like crawling up drains and piping. It is one of the many ways they get into homes. Today we are talking about one of the more dangerous spider invaders known as the brown recluse.
What Is The Brown Recluse?
Brown recluse is among three dangerous spiders here in Mississippi. The thing that sets them apart is the fact that they look very similar to many harmless spiders. Where the black widow is very distinct, the brown recluse has a plain appearance. They are often confused with other much less threatening spiders. For this reason, if you see any yellowish-brown spider with a dark brown shape on its back in or out of your home, it is best to keep your distance.
What Attracts Brown Recluse To Homes?
Brown recluse, like most other spiders, are carnivores that hunt and eat other insects to survive. For this reason, the thing that draws these dangerous spiders into homes most is other pests, specifically ground pests such as firebrats, crickets, and cockroaches. If your home has a bug problem, spiders are likely to follow.
Where Do Brown Recluse Hide In Homes?
When inside, brown recluse prefers to stay hidden. Because they don’t build webs or typically climb walls, (even though they can) these spiders can be most commonly found in cramped places such as within woodpiles, sheds, garages, closets, and in areas that are cold and dry.
Prevention Steps For Brown Recluse
