Why Every Home In The South Needs Termite Protection
What do Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi have in common? They’re located on the Gulf Coast, enjoy warm weather for most of the year, and according to the Termite Infestation Probability Zone Map, are all situated in a very heavy termite infestation zone.
While we hate to be the bearers of bad news, it is important for homeowners in this region to be aware of the risks associated with termites and why it’s important to protect their homes from these destructive insects.
Termite Damage
In an effort to demonstrate the damage a termite colony can inflict on a home, the National Pest Management Association created the video below.
As you can see, while hiding in plain sight, termites ate away at drywall, wall joists, and flooring. The end result was sagging floors and a structurally unsound home. Unfortunately this happens all the time to unsuspecting homeowners and by the time the realize that their home has been infested, the damage is significant.
Another word about termite damage, did you realize most home insurance policies do not cover termite damage? That is because they are often considered a preventable problem and builds over time rather than happening unexpectedly and suddenly. That said, we highly recommend contacting your agent for clarification on what your policy includes.
Why Termite Infestations Hard To Detect
Unlike some pests that are easily seen when they invade, termites are masters at avoiding detection. They are generally found inside wood and will actually feed on and consume wood and wood by-products from the inside out. To give an example, a section of wall might look normal but if termites have been present for a while, you might notice a hollow sounds when you tap on it. Or if you opened the wall, you might find it filled with termites and termite damage.

Does DIY Termite Control Work?
If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you may be tempted to try to resolve a termite infestation without the help of a professional. Before you make the trek to the store to arm yourself with chemical and other products, take a few seconds to learn why DIY is not a great option when it comes to termite control or even pest control in general.
If used improperly or ingested, pesticides can be dangerous to house occupants and pets including respiratory issues, burns, and poisoning.
What’s more, without identifying and correcting the source of the problem, the chemicals may simply knock the pest down temporarily (they will come back) or cause them to spread to a different part of the house.
